Children’s Dental Care

As a family practice The Smile Team Balwyn North dental rooms warmly welcomes children to our dental practice.  After all, good dental health starts early.  Creating a positive dental experience is very important to begin a lifetime of good dental health. Dental problems can start at a very early age. Even the baby teeth that grow in the mouth from the age of 6 months can have an important role to play on the final health and alignment of the adult teeth.  There are also ever changing challenges to the health of the teeth at varying age groups into adulthood. We recommend that your child has a dental check up from the age of 2 upwards.

Our practice philosophies of modern comfortable dental care with a preventive focus carries onto looking after all our important little patients.  Preventive dental care for children relate to taking the time and energy to not only keep the teeth clean, but to also look at ways to help your child avoid active restorative dental treatment where possible.

The Smile Team clinicians have extensive knowledge about the natural progression from baby teeth to adult teeth and everything in between.  We are glad to be able to share our expertise with parents to benefit life long smiles.  Alongside regular cleaning and examinations, dietary advice, digital x-rays, and protective sealants are some of ways we can keep both baby teeth and young adult teeth healthy.

FAQS

How can Oral Health Therapists assist with your child's dental treatment?

Your child will begin their dental visits until the age of 18 with our Oral Health Therapists.  Our Oral Health Therapists are university trained specifically for children’s dental care and general preventive dental care for adults. In fact, Oral Health Therapists typically spend a greater amount of time treating children in their training than dentists do.  Oral Health Therapists are Dental Board of Australia registered to carry out a comprehensive range of treatments for ages 25 and under. They have the knowledge and skills obtained through their university training to provide very high standards of treatment for children, including extensive behavioural management skills to make your child feel at ease.

Our team of Oral Health Therapists know what it takes to make your child feel especially at ease. Linh, Melody and Natalie wonderful with children and together with our friendly team of dental assistants will create a very happy and playful environment.  In addition to approaching children in a friendly manner, we add balloons, stickers, and play Foxtel shows to make children’s appointments fun!

At what age should my child attend for a dental visit?

Our dental team recognise the importance to making your child’s dental experience fun and enjoyable through iPad games, stickers, balloons and Children’s DVD’s in the chair. Lifelong dental health begins with important early steps, and first impressions are everything.

The best time for a child to have their first dental visit is when they have their baby teeth at 18 months of age to 2 years of age. A simple and quick examination will allow us to introduce the child to good dental habits and identify risk factors. Some children are happy to show us their teeth early, others may take a few visits. We will always encourage your child to become comfortable in the dental setting at their own pace, never being forceful.

From the age of 6 we can start to detect issues with the alignment of the teeth and the development of the facial jaw structures. An assessment with an Orthodontist (specialists that align teeth) may be recommended from this age onwards.

Why do you have Oral Health Therapists?

In terms of utilising Oral Health Therapists, we have modelled our team care approach of children on some of the best regarded specialist children’s dentists in Melbourne. Oral Health Therapists are an integral part of most paediatric specialist dental clinics in Melbourne.  Oral Health Therapists are university trained oral health care providers who love helping children with modern dental treatment and preventive dental care treatment.
